Opera Workshop

The SDUK’s groundbreaking 3 day opera workshop has been pronounced a massive success.

16 participants and 13 observers from theatre, opera, film and TV backgrounds, attended a fascinating series of seminars and talks at National Opera Studio between October 31st and November 2nd. Most were SDUK members, one from as far away as Perth, all enjoying a substantial discount on the course fees, with three on SDUK bursaries.

The stellar selection of guest speakers included opera directors Annabel Arden, John Copley, Martin Duncan, Elijah Moshinsky, Thaddeus Strassberger, Orpha Phelan, Rodoula Gaitanou and Polly Graham, conductor Tim Burke, designer Isabella Bywater, festival directors Stephen Barlowe, Dougie Boyd and Michael Chance, Opera Europa Director Nicholas Payne, opera agent Tracey Elliston and critics Gary Kahn, John Allison and Anna Picard.

A key element of the course was two Practical Sessions in which each participant was given hands on directing experience and precise mentoring by one or other of the highly experienced directors contributing to the course.

A detailed description of the Workshop is available HERE.

We are currently processing detailed feedback from all those who took part. The lessons learned will feed into SDUK’s wider Training and Development plans, and hopefully soon into another opera directing workshop. We are also going to be pressing a number of UK institutions to put resources into opera director training over the longer term.
